iPad for Go

Is the iPad is the second best way of playing Go on a board? Not nearly as good as slate & shell on a kaya goban, of course - but it is less expensive, solves the problem of annotating moves, and doubles as a GPS.

Bill Clinton moving to Massachusetts?

Will the former president run for the Senate in 2012? It will be an opportunity to say that the senator is naked. A long shot, but if he does, you read it here first.

Oppenheimer on teaching and research

While in the library puzzling over some geodesic vector fields, I happened upon the text of a speech Oppenheimer made at Cornell in 1949 concerning teaching and research at liberal universities. He makes a deep observation which I shorten and paraphrase below, using his own words. The complete text can be found in the chapter "Science in Being" of "Oppenheimer, Metropolis, Rota, and Sharp. Uncommon sense. Boston: Birkhaeuser, 1984."

The professor who stands helpless before the unknown is much closer to the student than the teacher who knows all the answers. The experience of the student and of the researcher is to be puzzled. The ability to be humbled by a tough problem is one of the reasons why the most inspiring teachers are those who devote a good deal of time to their own researches. Respect for what other people have done before, and respect for ignorance, make them far more sympathetic as teachers than the professional pedagogues.

Sunset over DEC

Over the weekend Bill Clinton and Barack Obama both left messages on our phone to tell Susanna to vote tomorrow for Kennedy's replacement in the Senate. To illustrate the habitual result of conservative control over the US economy, here is a picture of the sun setting over "the Mill," the former Digital Equipment Corporation headquarters in Maynard, Massachusetts.

Vaporware computers

I enjoyed the coverage of the consumer electronics show last week. Main theme was all the serious companies rushing to talk up me-too readers and vaporware tablets. A vague controlled leak by Apple is enough to scare the big guys. That reminds me: whatever happened to Apple University?

Polytechnique vector

The Jacobi vector fields along a geodesic passing through a point p of an n-dimensional manifold M form a 2n dimensional vector space. One of the vector fields is gamma, tangent to the geodesic; another is t times gamma, where t is a distance function. The remaining Jacobi fields are the ones that determine the existence of conjugate points. Physicists tend to ignore t gamma completely; in a mathematician's scroll it may be mentioned once and then ignored, like Queen Vashti. But it is much loved by engineers, who give it the affectionate nickname "x" because in coordinates t gamma = x = x^i d/dx^i. Should we call it the polytechnique vector?

Quem entender me explique. Ou é melhor ignorar ambos?

iSlate this month?

iSlate on January 27? Two years later than my prediction? Wrong name? How much else did I get wrong? Better being wrong than writing about the Crunchpad vaporware......

At this point the key to success for a tablet is synchronization. iSync is not 100% there yet. For a device bigger than a pocket but with a small screen and no keyboard, syncing with phone and main computer is the make-or-break issue.
